Indian Dog Breeds

Indian Dog breeds are known for its bravery and hunting capabilities. We could see various types of dog breeds all across India. These Indian breeds naturally have very strong immunity, and hence the maintenance cost is very low compared to the other country breeds.  

Hounds:

Hounds are basically the hunting dogs. These dogs were used in the ancient period to hunt the wild boars which ruin the farmlands. Even today these hunters are used to hunt the rabbits, bandicoots, mouse, and other animals.

Some of the Indian Hounds are as follows,

 1.Chippiparai



This dog is a native breed of Tamilnadu. Chippiparai dogs are considered to be one of the best intelligent dog breeds of India. They tend to be shy and most likely to avoid crowds. These dogs are easy to train and to maintain. People who are doing farming business can have one to guard your farm.

As far as the maintenance is considered, this breed needs a large area for running and walking exercise in order to stay fit.

 2.Mudhol/Caravan Hound



This is one of the sighthounds, which is known for its speed. This hound is the first Indian breed to join the Indian Armed Forces. This breed can be found commonly in most of the villages of Karnataka. It has yet another name "Caravan Hound".

Even this breed needs sufficient running and walking exercise.

3.Rajapalayam/Sight Hound


This breed is named after its place of origination. This is the breed which looks so elegant and graceful among all other hounds of India.

Rajapalayam is a very intelligent dog, known for its strength. 

This tall looking dog tends to be more aggressive towards strangers. 

This breed was anciently used by the rulers of South India against the Cavalry forces of British.

4.Kanni


Kanni dogs have its looks similar to Chippiparai dogs. But the difference is that these Kanni dogs look very feminine compared to Chippiparai. This feminine look is due to its small and narrow looking face.

These are exceptional rabbit hunters. They are known for their speed. Even today we could see the dog races being conducted in India with these Kanni dogs.

 5.Kombai/Bear Hound


Even this hound is named after its place of origination. This hound is a little different from others because of its height and structure. Kombai dogs are medium-sized and muscular compared to others being tall and sleek.

Kombai dogs are believed to be existing since the 9th century. Historic pages have references for this breed used by the Tamil Kings Marudhu Brothers against the British forces.

Kombais are very aggressive towards strangers. They are not only known for hunting, but also for their loyalty towards their masters and their family. 

Mastiffs


Mastiffs are well known for their very big size and stature. They are said to be one among the most ancient dog breeds in the earth. They have a massive head size and wrinkles on their face.

 1.Alaunt Mastiff/Bully Kutta



Alaunt Dogs are one among the endangered species of South Indian Origin. Popularly called as Bully kutta. These mastiffs are now very rarely found in India. But are popular in Pakistan for dog fights. These are very ferocious dog breeds. 

 2.Gaddi Kutta/Indian Gaddi


Gaddi Kutta is the mastiffs of the Himalayan region. A very ferocious breed used as guard dogs. This dog has a very unique fur, looks much like a lion. They cannot withstand the hot climate, in turn, they very well adapt to the freezing temperatures of the Himalayan region.

Indian Pariah Dog




Pariah dogs can be found anywhere in the streets of India. They are the most common watchdogs in India. These dogs have very good immunity against most of the diseases. Pariahs are very loyal to family members. These dogs very well accommodate the tropical climate. These dogs won't shed or drool much when compared to other breeds. In simple words, these are zero maintenance dogs.
