Sexing Finches

Little Finches are good breeders and behave as a good parent. It is necessary to identify the gender of Finches if you wish to do the individual breeding. If you are a Finch lover and would like to breed it at your home you need to identify which is which (male/female).

Even though in the colony breeding there should be an equal proportion of male and females present in the colony in order to avoid many problems like pecking each other.

How to identify the sex of Finches?

Based on,
1.Color Pattern
2.Beak
3.Activities

1.Based on Color Pattern

It is quite easy to determine male and female in Zebra finches using a specific pattern of colors in their body. There are many color variations in Zebra Finches. They are as follows,

  1. Standard Grey
  2. Black Chested
  3. Black Cheek
  4. Black Face
  5. Black Front
  6. Chestnut Flanked White
  7. Crested
  8. Eumo and Charcoal
  9. Fawn Cheek and Grey Cheek
  10. Grizzle
  11. Isabel Florida Fancy
  12. Light Back
  13. Orange Breasted
  14. Penguin
  15. Pied
  16. Silver
  17. White and
  18. Yellow Beak
Other than the White color finch, we can easily identify male and female by seeing the pattern in the cheeks of the male.

Female on the left , Male on the right side
Male Finch will have a orange pattern on its cheecks, whereas females dont have that. Males have very beautiful patterns on its body compared to female.

2.Based on Beak

Female on the left. Male on the right side
By seeing the above image you can find a difference in the beaks of the finches. Female on the left will have an orange colored beak, whereas the male on the right side will have a dark red colored beak. Only you need to observe, you can easily identify.

This is the only easy method to determine male and female in White colored Zebra Finch. Because both male and female will be completely white and you could find no color pattern.

Males have Dark Colored Beak and Female has Light colored (orange) Beak

3. Based on Activities

This type of sexing finches has limitations. Here males will often sing songs to attract females, whereas this can be seen only with the adult finches. With this method, you cannot determine the gender of young finches. Even for the adults, it is a bit difficult because you may not find them singing once you go near them. You also need to wait and observe from a distance. When you go near the cage they may fear and will not sing having you nearby.

Female Finch will not make much noise they will remain silent as always.
